Taqwa School

Taqwa School

Located in North Canberra (ACT) in the district of Gungahlin, the 50,068 m2 site is within the newly developed suburb of Moncrieff which is approximately 18.5km from the City Centre, 2.9km from Gungahlin Town Centre and about 13.0km from Belconnen Town Centre. The site is bound on three sides by Yidaki Way, O’Keefe Avenue and Hoffman Street.

In early 2016, the Canberra Muslim Youth (CMY) commissioned us to develop a Master Plan for the private school that would accommodate about 600 students and 75 teaching and other staff. A Site Analysis was done and a Concept Plan prepared for the site.

The Concept Plan set the broad structure for the school which then formed the basis for a Master Plan to be developed. The Master Plan was conceived around an east-west axis with a Central Assembly Court being the focal point of the complex. Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles were key in setting up the design layout for the school campus.

It was essential that the layout and orientation of the school facilities achieved northerly aspect for the classrooms and the play areas. The facilities were also to optimise cross ventilation and provide shade in summer.

Furthermore, the building designs had to incorporate environmentally sustainable features that would contribute towards reduction in energy and maintenance costs.

The Master Plan was adopted by CMY in June 2016. It now forms the basis for any development proposed on that site.
